BREAKING: Tinubu names Abuja highway after Wole Soyinka

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally named the Arterial Street N20, stretching from Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX), as Professor Wole Soyinka Freeway.

This transfer follows a advice by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration as introduced by Presidential media aide, Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday, 4th of June, 2024.

The renaming honours Professor Wole Soyinka, a distinguished playwright, poet, and novelist, who will have fun his ninetieth birthday on July 13.

President Tinubu highlighted Soyinka’s extraordinary contributions to literature and his function in elevating Nigeria’s international cultural standing.

Notably, Soyinka was the primary African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

“Professor Wole Soyinka has introduced immense honour and fame to Nigeria by his unparalleled contributions to literature and his unwavering dedication to human rights and social justice,” President Tinubu acknowledged.

“Naming this freeway after him is a becoming tribute to a person who has devoted his life to the pursuit of reality, freedom, and creative excellence.”

The newly named Professor Wole Soyinka Freeway stands as a logo of nationwide satisfaction and recognition of Soyinka’s enduring legacy. The street is an important artery in Abuja’s transport community, connecting key areas and facilitating motion throughout the town.

This tribute comes as Nigeria and the world put together to have fun the ninetieth birthday of one among Africa’s most revered literary figures. The naming ceremony is anticipated to happen quickly, with dignitaries and cultural icons in attendance to honour Soyinka’s lasting impression on literature and society.
