Excitement as Ibadan residents welcome new Olubadan Oba Olakulehin to new palace (Video)

Recall on Friday, July 12, 2024, the vibrant city of Ibadan, renowned for its cultural richness and deep heritage, celebrated a historic moment as it witnessed the installation of its first paramount ruler to ascend directly from king to Olubadan, marking a significant milestone in its history.

The ceremony occurred at the bustling Mapo Hall Arcade, where a diverse assembly of people gathered from all corners of life to witness the occasion. The Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde presided over the proceedings, officiating the coronation of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

Formerly the Balogun of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin now assumes the esteemed role of the Olubadan of Ibadanland. This transition signifies not only a new era of leadership but also underscores the enduring traditions cherished by the people of Ibadan.

Earlier in the day, Oba Olakulehin undertook traditional rites at the Labosinde Quarters before proceeding to Ose Meji Quarters for his formal coronation ceremony.

Following the coronation, a jubilant atmosphere greeted Oba Olakulehin at Mapo Hall Arcade, where Governor Makinde presented him with the staff of office and other symbols of authority. However, the journey leading up to this historic event was not without challenges.

In 2022, the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, faced a unique requirement for his ascension, necessitating all beaded crown-wearing kings in Ibadan to temporarily relinquish their crowns.

This condition was set to pave the way for Oba Lekan Balogun’s installation. Subsequently, after reclaiming their crowns through traditional processes, their nominations were approved by Governor Seyi Makinde, culminating in their installation as beaded crown-wearing monarchs in July 2023.

The preparation for Oba Olakulehin’s installation also saw the unveiling of the modern Olubadan Palace on July 10, 2024. This state-of-the-art structure, conceived during the tenure of Oba Samuel Odulana and Chief Bayo Oyero in 2011, was officially commissioned by Governor Makinde.

The palace located at Oke-Are, serves as both the official residence and administrative center for the Olubadan of Ibadan, replacing the previous Mapo Palace situated within Oba’s Market (Oja’ba), which was deemed inadequate for the ruler of a kingdom with over five million subjects.

Governor Makinde emphasized the ongoing importance of maintaining the palace, announcing that all 11 local government councils in Ibadan would contribute monthly towards its upkeep. Looking ahead, he outlined plans for the second phase of the palace project, which includes renovating Bower’s Tower to further promote tourism in Oyo State.
