JUST IN: Like Reps, Senate passes bill to reintroduce old national anthem

The Senate on Tuesday handed the Nationwide Anthem Invoice 2024 to revert to the outdated nationwide anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee”.

The invoice, which speedily handed first and second readings, now awaits assent into regulation by President Bola Tinubu.

The Home of Representatives had on Thursday handed the invoice.

Majority of the lawmakers in each chambers of the nationwide meeting spoke in favour of the invoice after they debated on its common rules.

Whereas debating the invoice final week, Victor Umeh, senator representing Anambra central, stated an anthem is meant to be motivational, including that the present one is something however emotive.

“The outdated one we’re looking for to convey again is one which evokes feelings,” Umeh stated.

“A nationwide anthem is meant to be motivational. There may be motivation within the outdated anthem.

“I believe from what my colleagues have stated, there may be nothing within the present anthem that motivates our individuals. If we convey it again, our youngsters can be extra dedicated to the beliefs of nationhood.”

There have been combined reactions for the reason that nationwide meeting started taking steps to reintroduce the outdated nationwide anthem.
